Water.org and Thankful Pie Bakes, May 2018

ChurchNews & Events

Grateful to all who prayed for, donated to, thought about, or conserved water! First United Methodist raised $313.54 for water.org, and MILAN, the Hispanic congregation that meets after we do, gave $116.54 at the Thankful Pie Bake. Troop 520 had a Thankful Pie Bake and contributed $264.61. A total donation number will be available next month as not all funds are collected from various projects.
The last collection of aluminum cans brought in $104. This effort continues. If you use aluminum cans and are not already recycling them somewhere, please consider bringing them to the church and leaving them in the red recycling bin by the church office. The cans are collected regularly and sent to a recycling plant and the funds sent to water.org.
What does water.org do with the funds that we send to them? How is the money used? Originally, they provided water to communities. Then the organization added providing sanitation in each home. Now, water.org has partnered with financial institutions to provide low interest micro-loans. These loans are currently being repaid at a rate of 99%, and then the funds are re-loaned to other families. It’s like a pay it forward effort. This is maximizing the value of our donations!
What are the women and children doing with the hours that they no longer have to use making long walks to get water? For the women, that frequently means that they can take more care of their families and can take on an economic venture. Many women are starting businesses. The children now have more time to go to school, or just to play! What better thing for a child to do!
Our efforts are appreciated! Please continue to pray for our efforts, bring cans if possible, and be open to other Thanks for the Water Bake Offs!
